Just a reminder, our class Mass is tomorrow morning at 9:30 am. Please join us if you can!
Yesterday I sent home the purple Make-a- Ten Cards as well as a letter explaining the Make-a-Ten Strategy. Today I will send home the blue ones. Your child should cut these out and practice the strategy using the back of the card to view the corresponding dots, pictures, and numbers to understand how to make a ten. Practice this method with your child. As you continue to practice this strategy with your child, your child will become more skilled at using mental math. If you have any questions about the Make-a-Ten Strategy, please contact me.

I want your child to be a successful reader—and for that, I need your help.
When children choose their own books to read for pleasure, they enjoy reading more and spend more time doing it. The more your child reads, the better they will do in school and in life.
Scholastic Book Clubs flyers are made for you and your child to shop for books your child will love to read. Each month, the flyers are filled with trusted, excellent quality, age-appropriate books chosen by Scholastic for prices as low as one dollar.
Plus you will be helping our class when you order: Scholastic matches each order you place with FREE BOOKS for our classroom to share.
Thank you for helping your child become a successful reader. Please place your online order to me by March 14

Calling All Mystery Readers!
I would like to invite parents to surprise your child by being a “Mystery Reader” this year in our classroom. Students LOVE having their parents visit our classroom to share in our learning by reading a favorite story aloud to our class. Mystery Readers will visit us on a scheduled date and are asked to bring a book(s) to read to the class. I will be using Signup Genius to schedule our readers. If you can find a date that works for you, please sign up to be a Mystery Reader. There are many dates to choose from for the month of February to begin with. I will be adding more slots for the months of March. I will send a reminder email to you during the week of your chosen date, asking you to write three to five facts about yourself that will be used as clues for the students, to help them guess who will be reading to the class. You will have approximately 20 minutes to share your story with the class. Mystery readers may bring in multiple books to fill their 20 minute slot. Remember, you are a mystery to the class, so try not to tell your child when you will be coming! Please email me or drop me a "secret" note if you have any further questions. We can’t wait to meet our 2018 Mystery Readers! Please note that Mystery Readers begin in February during I Love to Read month. Our “Guest Readers” for I Love to Read month will be Mystery Readers so we can start this fun activity. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Today I'm sending home the spelling words and spelling homework for next week since it will be a four day week. The spelling homework is due on Wednesday.
Our reading has picked up! The children are now having to remember more digraphs and soon they will be introduced to many new vowel patterns. Because of this, it is now more important then ever that your first grader is reading 15-20 minutes daily. Be sure to have them read their paper readers to you or another adult as they come home. I will continue to send home a leveled reader (colored book) each week as well. Your child is reading for accuracy, fluency, and comprehension. Let me know if you have any questions.

There will be no spelling homework or spelling test this week. We will be doing lots of reviewing this week and next! We are taking a math test this afternoon. Math homework will be coming home tomorrow with the introduction of our new unit.
We made an advent wreath in school today. Advent runs the four Sundays before Christmas. The circle symbolizes eternity, the greenery symbolizes new life, the purple candles symbolize humility and patience, the pink candle symbolizes Joy. We light the candles because “Jesus is the light of the world.” The children “lit” their first and second purple candles for the first and second weeks of advent. They have extra yellow construction paper in their folders to light the other candles each Sunday. The pink candle will be lit on the third Sunday of Advent.

I will be sending home an extra reader for your child each week beginning today. Please listen to your child read it at least twice making sure they are correctly reading the words. The books will have the vocabulary words that we are working on for the week. There is a section in the back of the book with possible things to discuss or activities to complete. If your child wishes to return a completed activity to school, that is optional. The book needs to be returned on Friday. Just to recap; a book will come home each Monday and will need to be returned on Fridays.
I'm also including a document on practicing sight words(vocabulary words). I hope you find some of these ideas useful as well as fun.

You can always find the link at the bottom of my email pages. There will be no spelling homework or spelling words this week. My class will be visiting the Scholastic Book Fair on Wednesday as a class. Your child may bring money for this.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Lee
